What is the Global Game Jam?

Created in 2009, the Global Game Jam (GGJ) has become the biggest game jam in the world. Each year, participants from all walks of life, professionals and amateurs alike, come together in January to take up a unique challenge: create a game in 48 hours based on a theme revealed at the start of the event. With hundreds of host sites across the globe, the GGJ encourages discovery and creative renewal.

At the GGJ, there is no competition, only collaboration. The aim? To help each other, share unique moments and, above all, have fun. Participants can explore all kinds of creations, from video games to board games, card games and even escape games. It’s also an exceptional opportunity for creators to showcase their talents to prestigious sponsors such as Xsolla, Github, Unity and the Game Developers Conference (GDC).

An immersive experience on our campuses

ESMA is proud to host the Global Game Jam on our Rennes campus. No fewer than 150 participants have registered to take part in this major event.

For three days, our spaces will be transformed into veritable hubs of creativity, offering participants everything they need to bring their ideas to life.

On Friday evening, everything begins with the revelation of the theme, followed by the formation of the teams. Special activities will bring together a wide range of profiles, encouraging participants to mix and collaborate with new people, whether from other classes or other disciplines. The aim? To stimulate innovation and discovery.

In addition to the creative sessions, ESMA will be offering a number of side events to enhance the experience: introductory software workshops, relaxation breaks with games such as Mario Kart… and, of course, a final presentation of the projects.

Enthusiasts of programming, game design, graphic design, music composition or simply those curious about the world of games registered for the GGJ are in for an exceptional experience. It’s the perfect place to learn, experiment and have fun.

A human and creative adventure

Taking part in the Global Game Jam on our campuses means plunging into the heart of a unique human and creative adventure. Each team will have its own fully-equipped workspace and will be able to rely on the energy of the group to overcome any technical or conceptual challenges.

The experience goes far beyond creating a game: it’s a chance to forge links, share know-how and push back the limits of your imagination. And who knows? Perhaps the projects presented will inspire future works or attract the attention of big names in the industry.
