Wine bar

The students in their first year of the Bachelor's Space Design programme were given the task of refurbishing a derelict structure to make it a convivial place to live.

A variant of restaurants and other brasseries, wine bars are specifically dedicated to promoting the famous beverage that is wine. Although wine-growing regions have their own speciality, they do not have a monopoly on it. In addition to the wine, snacks can often be offered to customers, providing a complete experience. This makes it a place of discovery and pleasure, but also a place where people can meet, talk, share and even relax.

The venue itself is of paramount importance. In addition to the selection of furnishings, the setting often enhances the bottles by giving them pride of place, highlighting the special character of the place.

This is the subject that the first-year Bachelor of Space Design students from Montpellier have been working on, proposing their own design concept

SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE

Redeveloping an old tobacco drying shed into a wine bar.

EXERCISE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Make a layout proposal to transform a building,
  • The capacity is 100 people,
  • Include a bar, a staff room, an office, the kitchen and the dishwasher,
  • Think about the spaces in relation to the kitchen and its circulation,
  • A contemporary feel is preferred,
  • An object should be designed by the student (table, chair, reception desk, etc.),
  • A terrace may be considered but is not compulsory.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE

The students had to adapt an existing location, which had been neglected for years, to come up with a new version. This place had its own history that had to be preserved and integrated into the new use.

For this exercise, there was no budget constraint. The students could give free rein to their imagination and come up with the wine bar of their dreams. However, they had to keep in mind all the rules and standards involved in refurbishing a building, especially one that is open to the public, and think about the materials used.

They were also interested in object design by proposing a decorative element. It was up to them to think about its aesthetics, but above all its functionality and how it would fit into the overall scheme of things. It’s not as easy as it sounds, because you have to think about the constraints associated with the chosen object.
