Atelier Lavis

The world of drawing is full of techniques to master. For this project, the Prepa Entertainment students took a closer look at wash drawing. An ancient and complex technique, wash painting combines a number of concepts that need to be understood in order to produce a legible drawing. The students were able to learn this technique by basing themselves on their own hand, which is also a study of anatomy.

As part of their first anatomy drawing lessons, the Prépa Entertainment students, under the guidance of their teacher Ms Lenouvel, were able to experiment with the wash drawing technique. The aim was for them to be able to draw their free hand (the hand not holding the brush) with a single shade of colour.

This exercise required them to mobilise several concepts such as construction and gesture, representation and writing. At the same time, they were able to question and study their own anatomy from every angle and be able to represent it.

For the uninitiated, Lavis is a painting technique that uses a single colour. Traditionally, Indian ink was used for this purpose – watercolour can also be used – with a more or less strong dilution depending on the needs of the motif. The resulting work is a monochrome, and the support, which is usually white, allows the drawing to stand out, playing on chiaroscuro through the interplay of light and shadow. The famous writer Victor Hugo was himself a fan of this technique!

SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE

The hand, its representation and its relationship to the object, based on direct observation.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXERCISE

  • Construct views of the hand, alone, holding someone else or an object,
  • Make sketches using the Lavis method,
  • During the group feedback session, the students must evaluate each other’s work.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

This project had a number of pedagogical objectives. First of all, the aim was to encourage the students to use observation and precision to study their own hand, as well as its gestures and different positions. Then, of course, there is the ability to construct a drawing.

As far as marking was concerned, this led the students to take an objective view of the successes and points to be strengthened in the work carried out, using assessment criteria defined together at the start of the workshop. Over and above the objective of determining a grade, the idea is to build up one’s own perspective and to be able to stand back from one’s own work.
