It was almost a childhood dream come true for the students at the Prépa Entertainment in Lyon, who were able to become a superhero for the duration of a workshop. But beyond the playful, regressive aspect, the main aim of this exercise was to get them thinking about a number of concepts linked to volume and materials, while allowing them to work on their imagination and creativity.
An age-old fantasy, the myth of the hero has always accompanied the stories of humanity, to inspire it to dream. More recently, the hero has mutated to become a superhero, a person with extraordinary powers who uses them to do good. In recent years, these characters have become an integral part of our daily lives, with famous series and film adaptations.
For their art class, led by teacher Olivia Vidil, the students in the Prépa Entertainment section took on the role of superheroes and superheroines. They were able to realise this unspoken dream and transform themselves into the benefactors of humanity, all thanks to a little imagination and handiwork. From ordinary students, once they put on their costumes they become crime fighters!
And as the late David Bowie sang, “We can be Heroes, just for one day“! Find out more about the workshop and the costumes made by the students below!
SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE
You are a superhero! To be able to slip into the skin of the superhero of your dreams, you will have to choose a theme and then suggest 3 accessories to make up your outfit (helmet, wings, shield, cuff, tiara, crown, breastplate, weapon, bracelets, etc.).
EXERCISE INSTRUCTIONS
- Make 3 accessories in volume, scale 1,
- Use only cardboard or white paper,
- You can use staples, metal wire, sewing, brads or spray glue to fix certain parts,
- If fixings are used, they must be made invisible.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE
This workshop aims to call on the students’ creative skills, but also to encourage them to develop their curiosity through experimentation, while aiming for autonomy.
They will also be confronted with the problem of the structure itself: the search for volumes, the realisation, the solidity and dealing with the properties of cardboard structures. They will have to show their curiosity in order to explore the potential of cardboard and paper textures to visually enrich the project.
The students had to come up with a rich and legible graphic design that would feed the project. At the same time, they had to remember another of their objectives: to create an overall coherence between the 3 volume elements of the outfit that make up the superhero’s universe.
TECHNIQUE(S)
Cardboard, white paper, fasteners.
