Students in the Bachelor's and Master's Space Design programmes have set themselves free from the limits of reality to create architectural compositions straight out of their imaginations.
Students from Montpellier’s Mastère Design d’Espace and Bachelor Design d’Espace programmes have gone off the beaten track to come up with an architectural creation that is both imaginative and creative.
It’s a favourite exercise for artists, who can happily mix the real and the unreal. Hijacking a street or a monument, adding elements from another era or culture, playing with shapes and colours, all with an aesthetic objective in mind. But beyond the beauty of the project or the fun it provides, it’s a rigorous exercise involving the knowledge and implementation of numerous rules.
So it was under the guidance of teacher Thibaut Miossec that the students embarked on this experiment, which was as much fun as it was educational.
SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE
To create a collage of a freely-designed piece of architecture.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXERCISE
- Make a collage of architecture,
- The creation is free in its composition and choice,
- The overall layout must remain legible.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE
Firstly, this exercise gave the students a better understanding of page layout and graphic design software. The composition aspect of a project is essential and it is important for them to learn how to use these resources.
Secondly, the aim was not to produce an image compiling a multitude of collages, but to get the students to master the rules of composition. An image needs to be structured if it is to be legible and understandable. So they had to think about the placement of the elements that define this architectural collage.
This led them to think about the graphic side of the exercise, working on colours, textures, the various elements and even the placement of their logo and signature. How to integrate and blend the whole while maintaining coherence.
TECHNIQUES
