Become an Environment Artist

The Environment Artist is an essential link in the production of a video game. They are responsible for creating all the sets that make up the world of games, animated films and other entertainment media.

They create often imaginary environments straight out of their own imaginations, in 2D or 3D.

Tasks

The Environment Artist is responsible for creating backgrounds and sets for video games, but also for films. He or she generally intervenes fairly early in the pipeline to support the concept artists in their research into sets and references.

Overall, his tasks are as follows:

  • create 3D environments and sets
  • design objects and accessories to fit into the settings
  • respect the game’s technical constraints
  • use animation techniques: modelling, texturing, rigging, etc.
  • In production, they work closely with the level and game designers to ensure consistency throughout the project.

Skills and knowledge

The Environment Artist has strong technical skills and a thorough command of animation software (Maya, 3ds Max, Zbrush, Substance Designer & Painter, etc.).

In addition, this experienced technician, passionate about images, creative and imaginative by nature, has a strong artistic sense.

Observation skills, good team spirit, good communication skills and a sense of composition are all essential in this job, where the ability to listen is imperative if the ideas of the art director and creative team are to be translated with any relevance.

Environment Artists are rigorous, adapt quickly to teamwork and have a good pop culture.

Speaking English is also very important, particularly for opening up international opportunities, but also for mastering software, most of which is in English.

All these qualities and expertise can be acquired on our Video Games course at ETPA in Toulouse, Rennes and Montpellier.
