Allotment workshop

The 'allotment' workshop was part of the continuum of learning about perspective and mastering light and shadow for our Lyon-based Prépa Entertainment students. The subdivision, with its well-defined lines, was an excellent exercise for practising these skills.

After taking his Prépa Entertainment students back in time with a drawing assignment based around the “temple”, teacher Arnaud Quere continued their learning with a new exercise: drawing a housing estate.

A symbol of urban development since the 20th century, housing estates sometimes represent the culmination of a lifetime, the place where people hope to spend their days in peace. With streets lined with near-identical houses and gardens laid out in a similar way, this near-perfect geometry provided a perfect exercise in the rigour of the students’ perspective, the impact of light and the richness of detail.

A new challenge for the students, who were able to put forward their vision of these suburban areas.

SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE

Draw a house using precise dimensions. As the house is part of a housing estate, you will have to add details and decorative elements. You will also have to play with light and shadow. The drawing will be in black and white only.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXERCISE

  • Draw a house to precise dimensions,
  • Make the house part of a living environment by drawing other houses and decorating them,
  • Add light and shade,
  • The drawing must be in landscape format and respect the dimensions imposed.

EDUCATIONAL AIM

This workshop enabled the students to practise perspective, a difficult exercise but one on which the credibility of the image depends. The aim was to teach them how to use and understand the geometrical drawdown method.

To this was added the work on light and shadows. It was only by combining all these elements that the image could give the illusion of volume and depth.

TECHNIQUE(S)

Sheet of paper, pencil.
