Sophisticated beauty

The Prépa Entertainment students presented their vision of sophisticated beauty during an art class.

Beauty. Beauty characterises that which is beautiful. This notion of beauty has intrigued and captivated artists. Defining beauty varies from one person to another, from one culture to another, from one era to another. Each person is capable of defining their own scale of beauty. The subject is therefore vast and even straddles the philosophical realm.

It is this notion that the students from Lyon’s Prépa Entertainment, under the guidance of their teacher Olivia Vidil, have attempted to represent. More than beauty, sophisticated beauty! The representation they had to produce was also a pretext for them to try out different textures for the project, while working on anatomy.

SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE

In portrait or landscape format, propose an image of a face of sophisticated beauty.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXERCISE

  • Work on an A3 format,
  • Choose portrait or landscape format,
  • The rendering must be in monochrome only,
  • Create your own tools to apply the colour,
  • Do not use pens, felt-tips, chalk or brushes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

This workshop encourages students to look at the elements around them in a different way, to the point of using them as tools. It was important to be creative in order to create the portrait, to test the different accessories, to find their graphic potential in order to determine the right composition for the portrait.

The students had to construct and structure their image. It was also up to them to know how to compose and deal with the hazards of the tools used, as well as the ‘accidents’ that these can cause when applying paint, as they offer a degree of spontaneity.

The finished project had to be coherent and rich in both visual and graphic terms, while still being legible.

TECHNIQUES

Paper, Indian ink, various tools (fingers, metal tip, fork, lace, comb, toothbrush, straw, sponge, cloth, textured objects, etc.)
