Quais du polar

Students at Lyon's Prépa Entertainment got to grips with poster design, using the theme of a famous literary event in their city: the Quais du Polar festival.

During a Graphic Design workshop, under the guidance of their teacher Olivia Vidil, the students at Lyon’s Prépa Entertainment tried their hand at a Graphic Design exercise by creating an advertising poster. And it wasn’t just any poster they had to create, but one for Quais du Polar!

For aficionados of the detective genre, this is the literary fair not to be missed! For seventeen years now, this three-day festival has been inviting anyone with a passion for detective fiction. It has even become a not-to-be-missed event in Lyon, attracting no fewer than 80,000 visitors.

So it was on this subject, and this large-scale event, that the students had to reflect and propose their vision of it in order to sublimate it and interest passers-by and participants.

SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE

Based on the Quais du Polar festival, create its promotional poster.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXERCISE

  • Produce a poster in the required format,
  • Think about and propose a concept,
  • Integrate the codes associated with the world of thrillers,
  • Respect the colours of the event: black, red and white,
  • propose a clear message.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE

The aim of this exercise is to teach students to create a composition that incorporates a clear message that the public can understand. The poster has to be visible, in order to be read, in an urban context overloaded with diverse and varied information. It has to be hard-hitting to capture the attention of passers-by.

Creating this poster also gave the students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the practice of graphic design. They learn about a number of graphic design concepts, such as typography and how to use it to convey a message, and image composition to link text and images.

TECHNIQUE(S)

Paper cut-outs, coloured pencils, acrylics, etc.
