Memory typographie

Students at Montpellier's Prépa Design are discovering typography in the form of a game: memory!

The rules of Memory are simple: within a set time limit, find the two similar cards from a multitude. It’s the perfect way to work on your memory and speed. Teachers Virginie Torsiello and Catherine Jean used the principle of this game with their students at the Prépa Design course in Montpellier to get them working on typography.

Although typography is an integral part of our daily lives, it is more complex than it seems. It’s not just a question of typefaces offering more or less varied shapes to compose words. Their smooth and full strokes bear witness to their era and reflect a specific genre and style. Today, there are several typographic families: 12 according to the Vox-Atypi classification adopted in 1962 by the International Typographic Association.

SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE

Create a “memory” card game based on typography.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXERCISE

  • Choose a letter from the alphabet,
  • Do some typographic research around this letter,
  • Choose the typeface families,
  • Suggest 8 different typographic variations of this letter,
  • Create a “memory” card game with these letters and typefaces.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

The aim of this fun workshop is to introduce students to the different families of typography. Typography is an essential element in the life of a graphic designer. The choice made can change the meaning of a message, from softness to shouting.

Knowledge of the different typographic families, some of which have become essential. Knowing them, and recognising them, is part of the general culture of a graphic designer, and if they want to be able to play with words in their future creations, they need to be able to draw on this knowledge to make the most of it.

TECHNIQUE(S)

Paper, use of black (Indian ink, felt-tip pen, posca, rottring, etc.).
