Hotel Adriano

We're heading for the world of one of Miyazaki's legendary films: Porco Rosso. As part of their course in volume design, the students reproduced the Hotel Adriano.

The sixth film from the famous studio Ghibli, Porco Rosso tells the story of an anthropomorphic pig, a seaplane pilot fighting against the pirates of the skies in Italy between the wars. The film is a real tribute to the history of aviation and is faithful to the machines used at the time.

Like all of Miyazaki’s films, it was a great success on release and remains a Studio Ghibli classic.

It was on this atypical subject that the Prépa Entertainment students in Lyon worked, creating the Hotel Adriano, the film’s must-see location.

SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE

To create the Hotel Adriano from the film Porco Rosso in volume using 2D plans.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXERCISE

  • Make the Adriano hotel in volume,
  • 1 construction per Prep Entertainment class,
  • The class is divided into groups and each group has to build one part of the hotel,
  • Create coherence between the different parts of the building,
  • 5 sessions to build everything.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE

This exercise gives students a chance to try their hand at volume. Starting from a plan with precise dimensions, they had to create a three-dimensional model of a two-dimensional drawing. This trains their eye for the 3D environment and enables them to think about the transition from flat to volume.

TECHNIQUE(S)

cutter, pencil, extruded polystyrene, cardboard, wood glue, neoprene glue, etc
