Students in their 3rd year of 3D Animation and Special Effects at Montpellier have designed and built a creature as realistically as possible.
Traditionally, the 3rd year of 3D Animation and Special Effects has a particularly complex and technical workshop: the Digi Double. The aim of this workshop is to reproduce the student’s face as faithfully as possible.
But this year, the Montpellier school innovated by offering a different exercise. This time it wasn’t their faces that they had to reproduce, but rather imagine and build a fantastic creature as concretely and accurately as if it lived in our world. The creature’s anatomy, proportions, fur, scales and all other organic elements had to be credible.
SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE
Create an imaginary creature inspired by nature.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXERCISE
- Imagine a creature,
- Make the creature as realistic as possible,
- Integrate the creature into an environment,
- Add light work.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE
The idea of this exercise is to draw inspiration from the specific features of nature to create a creature. The animal kingdom is full of anatomical and behavioural oddities and peculiarities. By observing the surprising evolutions of certain species, the students had to draw the essence from them to feed the design of their project with the technical challenges that they entail.
This workshop completes and applies all the courses and techniques that the students have been learning since the start of their course. The aim is not simply to create a creature, but to reflect on its overall anatomy and morphology in order to make it credible if it were to be animated in films.
TECHNIQUES
Maya, Renderman, Photoshop, Nuke, mudbox, ZBrush, Mari.
