The temple" workshop

To work on the accuracy of perspective, the interplay of light and shadow, the size and placement of elements and their accuracy, the Prépa Entertainment students tried their hand at reproducing an ancient temple. It was a great way to take a plunge into Ancient History!

The word “temple” in itself is a powerful one, with a whole imaginary world surrounding it. In this sacred place, we can imagine a deity treading the ground, a crowd chanting hymns or a multitude of rites being celebrated. This place of worship has always existed alongside humankind, from the sober, rocky beginnings to the modern, luxurious sanctuaries, adapting to the changing times and local cultures.

So teacher Arnaud Quere took his Prépa Entertainment students back several hundred centuries, plunging them directly into the Greek-Roman era. This new work led them to work on and master perspective, one of the essential foundations of drawing.

SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE

Draw a temple using precise dimensions. It is possible to add details and Greek or Roman decoration, as desired. The drawing will be in black and white only.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXERCISE

  • Draw a Greco-Roman temple in pencil,
  • You can decorate the temple,
  • Add shadows and lights,
  • Create an environment in which the temple will be placed,
  • The drawing must be in landscape format and respect the dimensions imposed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

This workshop enabled the students to practise perspective, a difficult exercise but one on which the credibility of the image depends. The aim was to teach them how to use and understand the geometrical drawdown method.

To this was added the work on light and shadows. It was only by combining all these elements that the image could give the illusion of volume and depth.

TECHNIQUE(S)

Sheet of paper, pencil.
