From antiquity to the present day, the representation of the human body has never ceased to illustrate visual art. Whether in symbolic, classical or stylised form, this inexhaustible theme continues to interest artists and designers.
Drawing the human body is a fascinating and demanding subject that requires methodical learning.
The first step is to understand the structure of the body and the canons of proportion, and to adapt them to different morphologies and positions. The next step is to use observational drawing to treat the body as it really is.
This exercise has many advantages. It requires a keen sense of observation and develops the ability to identify proportions. The ‘living’ nature of the subject also means that the expressive aspect can be dealt with. It can be approached in an analytical, synthetic or stylised way.
