Anatomical drawing, the study of the human body, is one of the solid foundations to be acquired in the practice of drawing. Understanding the body, its various components and its gestures will enable the draughtsman to master the credible construction of a character.
Artistic anatomy is the study of the internal structure of the human body and its artistic transcription. This work focuses on the human body and more specifically on its composition: skeleton, muscles, balance and movement. This specific study can also be applied to animals. This is a fundamental part of drawing practice, enabling a realistic and faithful representation of the subject.
Beyond simple reproduction, it is also an opportunity for students to improve their understanding of the body and how it functions. This is essential for any future image professional who needs to reproduce or create characters with exact proportions.
It’s all these aspects and the basics of drawing that teacher Tom Cuminal has instilled in his students at Prépa Entertainment.
SUBJECT OF THE EXERCISE
By observing a skeleton, study the human body – and more particularly the arm and hand – by varying the postures as well as the representation techniques.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXERCISE
Based on the study of a skeleton, propose several drawings:
- Three different views of the arm (shoulder blade, shoulder, elbow, hand),
- A “skinned” view of an arm (myology),
- Several views of the arm in movement,
- A rendering of light on the skin
- Several sketches of a single hand & two hands together (varying views and scales of representation)
EDUCATIONAL AIM
The aim of this exercise in anatomy is to encourage students to study the human body in detail, its physiology, how it changes with movement and how it is arranged in space.
On the basis of this analysis, they had to transcribe this observation onto paper, respecting human proportions and making this anatomical study realistic.
To do this, the students had to be precise and pay particular attention to detail, as well as to the construction of the drawing. In this way, they were able to give credibility to the construction of a character by understanding its construction.
