Skills and knowledge

The Video Game Designer occupies a key position in the production of a video game. To do this job, you need to have a great deal of imagination, given the range of games software on the market.

A recognised and listened-to professional, he or she must be passionate about games and master the basic software (programming, possibly graphics), while taking into account what is technically feasible for the team in charge of the actual production of the game.

This requires a thorough knowledge of the world of video games, so it’s essential to keep abreast of technical developments in graphics and programming, as well as players’ expectations, so you need to keep your feet on the ground while being creative and have a good eye for the pencil.

You also need to have good interpersonal skills, because you’ll be working in a team with computer graphics artists, level designers, sound designers, testers and so on. As in all digital professions, fluency in English is essential.

The profession is attracting more and more young people, gamers who have dreamed of games such as World of Warcraft and Tomb Raider, but places are hard to come by. You have to be very competitive.

Starting salaries for video game designers start at €1,950 (junior salary) and can rise quickly after a few years’ experience, depending on the development studio. The amount varies according to the size of the company and the value of the project.

In this profession, experience and talent count for a lot. After several years’ experience, they may progress to a position of responsibility, such as production director.
