The role of the internal communications manager

The internal communications manager is the intermediary between management and employees.
The Director facilitates the support of all employees for the development objectives of the organisation by bringing meaning to them.

he or she informs all staff about recent appointments, various projects or any other company activity. The internal communications manager therefore acts as an interface between the company’s general management, its various departments and its staff. In this way, he or she communicates upwards and downwards, i.e. from the top to the bottom and from the bottom to the top, or between departments (cross-departmental communication).

Whether it’s about the company’s economic and social news, new projects or a redundancy plan, the internal communications manager chooses the most appropriate means of dissemination (in-house newspaper, intranet, information meeting, general meeting, press review, social networks, etc.). They may also organise ad hoc events such as trips or seminars.
To achieve all this, they have an independent budget at their disposal.

Skills and qualities

One of the qualities of the internal communications manager is that he or she has everyone’s ear and lets all the company’s staff know about it.

The skills needed to perform this role are as follows: good writing skills, computer literacy, and foreign language skills (English in this case) are a plus in organisations that work abroad.

To carry out their role effectively, internal communication managers also need qualities such as diplomacy, charisma, the ability to listen and summarise, easy contact and persuasiveness.
Overall, they organise communication initiatives aimed at strengthening the feeling of belonging to the company and enhancing its image.

Salary and career opportunities

Long an integral part of large private companies, this role is now of interest to medium-sized companies and is developing in the public sector (local authorities, associations, etc.).

Beginners start out as assistants. You may move into human resources or multimedia production. An internal communications manager starts at 2,000 euros gross per month. This salary may be higher depending on the size of the budget and the objectives set by management.
