Become a Layout man

The layout man is the linchpin that takes a project from storyboard to production

The role of the layout man

The layout man isolates and assembles the various elements of the storyboard (characters, sets, etc.) and determines the framing for each shot. He makes the storyboard concrete and is an essential stage in pre-production. It is the basis on which the other people involved in the project will work to create the film and produce the moving image. It’s a rigorous technical stage, which may seem tedious from a distance, but layout is nonetheless a fascinating work of graphic composition.

Remember that the quality of the animation, and therefore of the cartoon, depends to a large extent on this process. It is thanks to the indications and recommendations of the layout men that the 3D animators can then intervene effectively.

To become a layout man, you need to acquire both technical and artistic skills. A level 3 Bac in the applied arts, such as the Illustration Concept course, will give you access to this profession. The aim is to develop your artistic sense and acquire specific technical skills, with a wide range of opportunities.

Skills and qualities

Layout is a highly technical phase, which means that you need to know the lexicon and how it is codified, not forgetting basic cinematographic processes (angles of view, splices, etc.). Layout specialists have both drawing skills and a good knowledge of animation. They master specific software such as Maya, Adobe Photoshop and 3DS Max, which may vary according to the type of production and the studio producing the project.

It is important to be precise and clear, while ensuring compliance with procedures, conventions and standards. The layout man works directly with the storyboarder and the assistant director, and even the director on major productions.

Overall, artistic sensitivity, a sense of aesthetics and observation, the ability to adapt and, in certain circumstances, resistance to stress (working to tight deadlines), are all important assets for a layout man worthy of the name, who has first acquired a genuine culture of animated film.

Career and development opportunities

Often working on a casual basis, layout artists can also be salaried. They generally work for communications, advertising, press, publishing and marketing companies, or in graphic design or animation film studios.

There are many possibilities for advancement, including storyboarding, matte painting and, why not, animation.

What’s more, layout artists can also progress to the position of director or creative director. Others prefer to branch off into teaching at art and design schools.

How much does a layout artist earn?

As far as remuneration is concerned, the data is very vague or even non-existent. However, it is estimated that a salaried layout artist can earn an average of €37,000 gross per year.
