In this interview, we meet Oriane Pérignon, a passionate interior designer working for Agence GAU in Montpellier. At just 23 years of age, Oriane excels in her role as an architectural and interior design consultant. She opens the doors of her professional world to us, revealing the nuts and bolts of her career, her day-to-day missions and her vision of the profession.
Hello Oriane, could you introduce yourself in a few words?
Of course! My name is Oriane Pérignon and I’m 23 years old. I’ve been an interior designer for a year and a half. I’m currently working in an architecture, landscape and urban planning practice in Montpellier, at Agence GAU, formerly Atelier Garcia Diaz.
Can you tell us about your job and what you do?
My work is centred around a position as an architectural and interior design consultant.
This involves designing projects using 3D software in collaboration with the project managers. We design a variety of architecture, housing and office projects, as well as landscape and town planning projects. I also contribute to the preparation of tender documents and building permits. Part of my job is to draw up layout plans, which we then run through 3D rendering software such as Twinmotion to present clients with aesthetically pleasing visuals.
In short, I spend most of my time designing and producing the graphic and technical plans needed to build each project.
What are the main tools you’re used to working with?
I spend most of my time using software such as Revit and Autocad for CAD, I use Photoshop and Twinmotion for rendering, and various tools for drawing and designing layouts.
Who are your clients?
We mainly work with public (town councils, regional authorities, etc.) and private (developers) partners.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most about my job is the creativity and diversity of the projects. Each project is unique, which makes my job stimulating. I also enjoy the teamwork within our agency, where there is excellent cohesion and understanding.
How many people work at the agency in total?
Our agency employs 35 people, forming a strong, dynamic team.
What qualities do you think it takes to become an architect?
The essential qualities for becoming an architect are creativity, the ability to think conceptually and analytically, and strong communication and project management skills. It is also important to have a solid architectural background and a good command of computer-aided design tools.
What’s more, you need to be passionate about your work!
Do you think architecture is a technical field?
Yes, it is. Architecture is a highly technical field that requires both artistic and scientific skills. It’s important to have a good understanding of the principles of architectural design, as well as in-depth knowledge of construction and regulations.
It’s a balance between creativity and technical rigour.
Oriane, can you tell us about the impact of your experience at ESMA on your professional development?
Absolutely. ESMA was a real springboard for my career. The courses taught by architecture professionals enabled me to acquire cutting-edge technical skills, while at the same time nurturing my creativity. The diversity of the projects on offer also allowed me to explore different styles and approaches, which enriched my range of skills.
Can you tell us a bit more about the work placements you did during your training at ESMA?
The internships I’ve been able to do at ESMA are key moments in my training.
They gave me the opportunity to put into practice what I had learned in class and to confront the realities of the field. Working alongside seasoned professionals enabled me to understand the challenges of the profession, hone my technical skills and develop a real sense of professionalism. I learned how to manage projects from start to finish, work as part of a team and communicate effectively with customers. These practical skills proved essential when I started my professional career after graduating.
These experiences also enabled me to build up a solid professional network, which proved invaluable later on.
Finally, what advice would you give to someone who wants to go into architecture?
My main advice for those who want to go into architecture is to remain curious, to always be looking to learn and to be inspired. It’s also important to develop a portfolio by working on personal projects and looking for internship or job opportunities in architecture agencies.
In addition, it is essential to develop solid communication and project management skills, as well as remaining open to new technologies and developments in the field.
