Juni Ba: "At ESMA, I found people who encouraged me to develop my own universe"
Juni Ba is now an established artist, having worked with the likes of DC Comics and Marvel. He made his name at ESMA Montpellier, where he trained as a Concept Art Illustrator and graduated in 2016. Now a cartoonist, the young Franco-Senegalese recently answered an interview for his former school, in which he looks back on his years at ESMA, as well as the key stages that marked his career.
When he left school, Juni Ba began his career as a freelance illustrator. As the months went by and the number of projects grew, his assertive, dynamic graphic style attracted attention and began to attract emulation. He eventually attracted the attention of an American publishing house, TKO Studios, where he signed his first work, DJELIYA, a fantasy comic book steeped in West African folklore, for which he did all the writing, drawing, colouring and lettering.
During his visit to the ESMA Montpellier campus, where he gave a talk to students in the Illustration Concept Art section, he also gave an interview to the school’s staff, in which he looks back over the stages that have marked his career, sharing his daily life as a comic strip artist, his first love of comics, the projects that have fuelled his passion and those on which he has taken particular pleasure in working. He also shares his thoughts on what he appreciated about his years at ESMA, underlining the importance of this period in his professional development.
